Importance of Lip Care

Smooth, soft lips are important indicators of an individual’s physical well being. Any body's day is lighted up by a beautiful smile. A face looks more lively and beautiful when it is adorned by a beaming smile. A smiling face radiates happiness all over and our lips play a great part in delivering this radiant happiness through a stunning smile.

The lips are an important body part and they are quite sensitive and fragile. Hence, the lips need special care and maintenance. Lips do not contain the protective melanin pigmentation. They have only a thin outer cover of skin, followed by inner mucous membranes that are transparent and soft. Thus, it is essential that are lips are cared for in a special manner.

Types of Lip Problems

The most common problems of lips are cracked lips and dry lips. Sometimes, the lips are discolored and they take on a dark color due to various reasons like smoking, excessive use of lipsticks, nutritional deficiencies and general disregard of health. Lips do not possess glands for oil production, and they develop cracks due to allergies, extreme weather, skin infections, deficiency of Vitamin B and excessive lip biting.

Swollen lips are another problem for many people. Caused by stress, infection, overexposure to the sun, swollen lips are not only uncomfortable, they can make people feel self-conscious about their appearance; after all, a person's face goes a long way to presenting us to the world.

When you are considering your own lips, it is important to honestly ask yourself if you are making the situation worse, through smoking, unhealthy diet, too much sunlight. We often know, but are reluctant to admit, what is causing us health problems.

Natural Remedies for Lip Care

If you wish to have a smooth and luscious pair of lips, then you must take a well balanced nutritious diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits and cereals. To avoid dark lips, stay away from smoking and stop using lipstick. Keep your lips well oiled for large time spans and try and lubricate your lips with oil and cream before sleeping. Almond and coconut oils can be mixed in equal quantities and this mixture can be applied to the lips for the night. This routine can be followed for a period of 2 weeks for good results. Prepare a mixture of ½ tsp. of Castor oil, ½ tsp. of glycerin and ½ tsp. of lemon juice and massage the lips with this mixture. Make a cream of saffron and curds and apply it to the lips to avoid darkening.

Chapped lips can be cured by taking foods that are rich in Vitamin B and C. You can protect your lips from extreme weather by applying plain cream. Before sleeping, you can apply coco butter or peanut butter to your lips. Prepare a mixture of rose petals and milk cream and apply to your lips to smoothen them. You can also mix 1 tsp. of milk cream and 2 drops of glycerin and leave it on the lips overnight for shiny and smooth lips.

Lip chapping can be prevented by hot fomentation and application of a mixture of honey and Vaseline, at least 3 times in a week. You can mix fresh butter, nutmeg and turmeric in equal quantities and apply it to the lips. Keep your lips well moisturized always and exfoliate them on a regular basis.
